Handbook in the History of Western Philosophy by Albert E. Avey;
Book Review
The history of Western Philosophy is indeed of interest in understanding
modern society and civilizations. The book; Handbook in the History
of Western Philosophy is comparable to reading about 1500 pages
of Wikipedia on the subject. Indeed having done both now, I would
say that I recommend reading this book by Albert E. Avey.
Of course you cannot buy this book printed by Barnes
and Noble in 1957 because it is not available anywhere, except maybe
a couple of copies on eBay now and again. The book starts out with
a chapter called; "Early Reflective Thoughts" which goes
back to 3500 BC to about 700 BC and touches on the philosophy of
Babylonian and Egyptian past periods.
Then the book gets even more interesting during
the Pre-Socratic Periods and Greek Classic Periods. All the greats
of that time are mentioned as well as the foundation that would
later build into what we consider Western Philosophy.
Next we find some seven chapters taking us through
1AD to the 1850s and see the influence of religion and how that
affected Western Philosophy or perhaps stifled it, although that
is entirely up to the reader to decide how to play it. After the
1850s we see a new emergence of Western Philosophy take off and
that gives hope for the future.
From 1850 to the 1950s the book brings itself up
to date with the latest thinking of the time. If you are a philosophy
student, instructor or perhaps just interested in the history of
such things you should read it. My take on the book was one of disgust
towards Western Philosophy and human thought and the limited thinking
that has been trumpeted as deep thought. The book however was excellent
in allowing me to come to this observation.
I certainly hope this article is of interest and
that is has propelled thought. The goal is simple; to help you in
your quest to be the best in 2007. I thank you for reading my many
articles on diverse subjects, which interest you.
